NZ: Sea Survival Courses Limited Available Spaces in November
A requirement of Sail Noumea 2012 is that 75% of crew must have completed and have a current Advanced Sea Survival Course certificate.
This course covers topics from basic weather education and guidance on how to exit a low pressure weather system safely, rescue aircraft signals and first aid and medical emergency at sea, to survival techniques in an abandon ship and life raft situation. The course consists of a class room session with written test and a practical session with life raft, life jackets, and wet weather gear.
RAYC Sail Noumea 2012 race director Mike Wilson urges all offshore and coastal sailors to complete the course saying “This is a must do course for anyone entering Sail Noumea or contemplating an offshore or serious coastal race”.
The Sea Survival course will be run from Royal Akarana Yacht Club at The Landing, Okahu Bay, Auckland. Places are limited and bookings are essential. Bookings can be made by e-mailing RAYC Manager Kevin Robertson (Kevin@rayc.org.nz) or by phoning the yacht club on 09 524 9945.
A condition of entry to the White Island race is that 30% of the crew of any yacht entered must have completed and have a current Advanced Sea Survival Course certificate.
The White Island race is a suitable qualifying race for Sail Noumea and ideal to test both boat and crew in real offshore race conditions.
November 25th start for 2011 White Island race
The 2011 White Island race from Auckland around White Island in the Bay of Plenty and back to Auckland is a classic kiwi yacht race. The 300nm race rounds New Zealand’s only active offshore Volcano and tests sailors navigation skills with rounding’s of the Coromandel Peninsula and Curvier Island.
The race is a perfect way for sailors considering Sail Noumea 2012 to test crew, watch systems, and boat set-up in real offshore race conditions. Royal Akarana Yacht Club urges all crews who have registered an interest in Sail Noumea 2012or simply have a desire for adventure to enter the 2011 White island race. Notice of Race and entry forms can be found on the RAYC website (www.rayc.org.nz) or can be collected from the club.
If you are thinking about competing in Sail Noumea 2012. Have an interest in offshore sailing. If you are interested in safety at sea, or simply keen to attend the presentation from Brett Blakewell-White you are welcome at RAYC on 29th September from 6pm. The bar will be open. A selection of light food will be served. Presentations will begin at 7pm.
